Fall 2019 Meeting

GEORGIA CONFERENCE OF THE AAUP
Spring Membership Meeting
October 5, 2019
Morehouse College, Atlanta
Atlanta, GA

Our fall meeting will be held at Morehouse College in Atlanta on Saturday, October 5, beginning at 9:30am. The doors will be open starting at 8:30am, and there will be a social / introductory session starting at 9:00am. We usually complete our business by 3:30pm.

The meeting will be held in the Afro-American Hall of Fame, the second floor of the MLKing International Chapel. There is a large statue of MLKing out front. It is building 31a on the attached map.

Most people enter campus from Lee Street exiting off I-20. When heading West, you make a right or when heading East (intothe City) you make a left and cross over the highway. Morehouse is straight ahead. There will be a guard booth, where you can stop and have the location pointed out to you.

You will park in the deck to the right, number 37a on the map. The Chapel is about a block down on the left.

You can also enter campus from Lowery Street using the exit off I-20. Coming from the West, you make a left on Lowery, the first main street. Coming from the East, you come down the ramp and make a right. This is the other side of the campus and there is also a guard booth. Enter, come straight and pass the Chapel on your right and proceed to the deck on the left.

For lunch, the cafeteria will be open. There is Chick-fil-A, Which Wich Sandwich shop, and a few other selections on the first floor of the parking deck.

There are a number of issues affecting us all this year, including the reorganization of the AAUP at the national level. We will be discussing the possibility of establishing an official AAUP “Section” consisting of Chapter membership for those chapters who themselves would not be able to afford attendance at the national meetings in DC, in order to retain a voting presence at that now biennial June meeting. We will also discuss the potential benefit of hosting our own regional AAUP meeting in the off years, starting in the summer of 2021. We will also discuss the continuing trend of closed Presidential searches, in which none of the candidates is ever identified to the faculty at large other than the final selectee him/herself; in one case in our state, this was even the case for a Provost search. And finally, we will talk about the recent changes in health insurance at public institutions, including the “spousal surcharge” that is sure to be a topic at the USG Faculty Council later in the month.

The overall purpose of the AAUP is to represent our members in ensuring a robust presence of academic freedom, tenure, and shared governance at all of our institutions, public and private. All members, not just chapter leaders, are invited to attend and to bring up any issues in any of those areas, especially ones that affect all of us. Faculty members who are not yet AAUP members are welcome to attend as non-voting visitors. I hope you are planning to attend, and to visit Morehouse College!
